    I am a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in Agriculture Education with a minor in Agriculture Economics.
    Growing up I loved to visit my cousins on their dairy farm near Wayne, NE. I thought it was so cool that they had bottle calves to take care of and I always wanted one. Since my Dad didn’t let me have one, I had to get my fix when I visited my cousins. Now that I have grown up, I still think bottle calves are pretty cool. However, I have a new appreciation for what my cousins did and still do on a daily basis.

    The average age of the U.S. farmer is 55 years old. When I hear this statistic, I often worry about the lack of youth wanting to return to the farm and wanting to be involved in agriculture. To my relief, the Nebraska Agriculture Youth Institute (NAYI) lessened my worries.

    Summer keeps farmers and ranchers busy making sure their animals are as comfortable as can be. On our farm, that meant making sure everything had plenty of water and I spent lots of time outside hauling buckets of water to the chickens and turning on and off the hydrant to fill up the water tubs for the sheep.

    Fall the season of football, falling leaves, Halloween and harvest. Growing up on our family farm I loved harvest time. To some harvest means slow traffic behind tractors and trucks moving from field to field, for others long days but to me it meant combine rides.
