How Food Choices Can Influence Generations

May 7, 2014Food

As drivers of the grocery cart and patrons of the pantry, women can have an incredible impact on what is or is not prepared and served in the home. In fact, moms are the primary change agent when it comes to creating healthy eating habits that can be passed on to the next generation. This kind of influence on family diets begs the question – what foods can be chosen today and beyond to create a more beneficial food blueprint?

Registered dietitian Jen Haugen, creator of the Down-to-Earth Dietitian blog and licensed dietitian for Hy-Vee grocery stores, recently explored the impact of moms on the eating habits of multiple generations in her TEDx talk “How Moms Change the World."

How do you build a new food history?

  1. Experiment with new food flavors and textures
  2. Make meal preparation an activity for the whole family
  3. Plant a small windowsill or backyard garden to make a connection between the soil and plate

The next time a food choice arises, we’ll be asking ourselves if there is an opportunity to make an addition or revision to the family food history that could influence health for generations to come.
